Domus Living Houthavens

Courtyard Domus Living Houthavens Amsterdam

The courtyard garden of the Domus Living complex in Amsterdam’s Houthavens district was designed by Flux, in conjunction with Shift Architecture. The Houthavens, once the bustling heart of the timber industry, has been transformed in recent years into a modern and sustainable residential and working district. In this innovative urban area, the courtyard garden forms a green oasis, a place where residents and visitors can relax, meet and unwind.

City and nature connected

The robust, natural planting in the courtyard garden creates a lively atmosphere and contributes to greater biodiversity. Various seating areas invite people to meet and relax, but also provide outdoor workspaces. The planting gradually transitions into semi-paving and grows along stepping stones in some places, creating a natural and dynamic system.
Rainwater is collected in the courtyard garden, trees provide shade for cooling, and the variety of plants attracts birds and insects. This creates a liveable and sustainable environment in which architecture and landscape reinforce each other.
