Dordrecht Citypark

A new central park in Dordrecht where people, animals and plants have plenty of space

Dordrecht is committed to the growth of the city and wants to utilise and strengthen all its existing qualities. The Dordtwijk zone, with its many sports fields and facilities, and its sometimes hidden, park-like and scenic character, provides opportunities to transform this zone into a new city park that also connects the city with the surrounding area. A new central citypark in Dordrecht where people, animals and plants have plenty of space. A place where people can relax, walk, play sports and enjoy recreational activities, but also enjoy peace and quiet and nature.

The City Park connects two valuable nature reserves

The city park will feature a single continuous park path: a wide, 10-kilometre-long, smooth and clearly designed path on which you can run, walk, cycle and skate. The development of the City Park Dordrecht will also strengthen the ecological structure, increase biodiversity and water buffering, and expand the habitat of plants and animals in conjunction with space for nature experiences. A 5-kilometre-long amphibious link between the Wantij and the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch is part of this. The City Park thus connects two valuable nature areas, with the amphibious landscape also helping to cool the city, absorb peak rainfall and assist in the circulation of clean water.

The plan provides for a more efficient and compact layout of sports fields and the sports complex. This will make the park more accessible to the public, create more space for nature and make the park greener, bluer and less paved. The City Park XXL forms a single park, but with unique sub-areas consisting of six different polders. Each of these polders has a unique history and development, which means that each polder will have a different focus on one or more functions (water, nature, sports, recreation). This gives each polder, each sub-area of the City Park, its own character. The continuous visual language and identity of the park fit in with the character of the city and the island of Dordrecht. A bold and robust visual language, built with locally sourced materials. The City Park Dordrecht thus intertwines culture, nature, city and landscape.
