Park ter Walle: space for water, nature and city life in Menen.
Park ter Walle is being developed as part of the Menen Master Plan. The assignment involves designing the park and integrating ambitions in the areas of water, planting, history, functions, mobility, atmosphere and use. Flux proposes turning Park ter Walle into a city park with a natural, monumental and active character. Old landscape structures such as the Geluwebeek stream and the old fortifications are central to the design and will be used and reinforced. The natural gradients and differences in height are characteristic of the stream valley and will be accentuated and made accessible again. Park te Walle has the potential to become a distinctive green public space in Menen. Flux sees Park ter Walle as an important addition to the classic and secluded Brouwerspark.
A new path system gives the park better entrances and makes it possible to take various walks in the park. The main paths tell the story of the town of Menen and the history of the fortress. The central part of the park with the sports fields has a spacious character, creating long views through the park. The old stream is being developed into a wadi with adventurous paths and play areas. The wadi also plays an important role in improving the park’s water management. The fortress forms a beautiful backdrop for Park ter Walle. During the day, visitors can walk along the fortress through colourful flower fields, and in the evening, the fortress is illuminated with spotlights. The soil released from the construction of the hall will be used to create grassy park slopes with seating areas and play facilities. The outdoor area of the hall will naturally become part of the park. A series of specially designed seating elements along the paths and on the park slopes will give the park a strong identity and appearance.
Integration of all kinds of existing and new park functions, such as sports and games, into a multifunctional and layered park use. Park ter Walle has a range of different users and is characterised by a variety of quiet and busy areas with different atmospheres, from park-like to active. The different parts of the park are part of a larger park, and this integrated approach ensures that the park as a whole remains recognisable, yet can take on a wealth of different atmospheres. In its design, Flux has explicitly opted for a strategy in which the park is not realised as a fixed plan in one go, but rather in small steps so that it has the opportunity to grow into a dynamic and lively park.
