The Dommel has traditionally played a key role in the development of Eindhoven. However, due to industrialisation and urbanisation, the river has receded into the background in many places and is often hidden away within the city. At the same time, the Dommel has the potential to develop into a strong green-blue structure with space for both people and nature. By treating the river as part of a wider stream valley system, a valuable link can be established between the city of Eindhoven and the surrounding landscapes.
The Dommel Zone extends beyond the river itself; it can be seen as a coherent system in which water, riverbanks, surrounding public spaces and even built-up areas form part of this green-and-blue structure that cuts through Eindhoven. This zone consists of various layers: the Dommel with its banks as the ecological backbone, the areas along the water such as parks and recreational spaces, and the cross-connections such as streets and routes that link the city to the river. Thanks to this broad approach, the Dommel is no longer seen as a separate watercourse, but as a structuring element that connects the city spatially, ecologically and socially.
Climate change is leading to an increase in heat and extreme rainfall, and the Dommel zone offers opportunities to address this: the zone will be developed as a cooling green corridor featuring plenty of trees, vegetation and open water. In addition, rainwater will be drained in a smart way: from roofs to streets and ultimately to the Dommel. This system makes water visible and tangible, whilst at the same time reducing flooding. Where space allows, riverbanks will be widened and water buffers such as wadis created to absorb peak rainfall and provide cooling in the city.
The development of the Dommel zone will enable it to function as an ecological corridor linking various nature areas in and around Eindhoven. This role is reinforced by natural banks, varied vegetation and the creation of quiet zones for wildlife. The city itself also plays a part: green roofs, façades, streets and squares become part of the ecosystem through this connection. This creates a network of habitats for various species, from birds and insects to small mammals and amphibians. The aim is to make nature tangibly present not only along the Dommel, but throughout the entire zone.
Finally, the Dommel zone contributes to health and well-being. In an increasingly densely populated city, there is a need for places to relax, exercise and socialise. The Stadsdommel offers space for walking, sport and recreation, but also for tranquillity and experiencing nature. Green, shaded areas and proximity to water provide mental relaxation and relief from the heat on warm days. By making the Dommel more accessible and attractive, it becomes a place used on a daily basis that contributes to a healthier living environment for residents and visitors.
